iStock 000015780862XSmall 300x280 Is It The Flu or The Creepy Crud?Here where I live in the midwest there is a lot of sickness going around. The pharmacy lines are long. Many have symptoms of the flu, but is it the flu or just the creepy crud?

We I was growing up, my dad had a name for not feeling good no matter what you had. He called it the crud. Back then I really didn’t know what he meant by that, but now I believe he meant you had picked up some hitch-hikers. That being viruses and/or bacterial infections. So I added the name creepy to it. To me it’s just creepy thinking about those microscopic bugs being in your body.

So how do you know if it’s the flu or the creepy crud?

Well the flu is also caused by viruses, influenza A or B. The symptoms can be similar to a cold (creepy crud), but the flu is much worse.  Colds for instance can drag you down but the flu can literally put you down in the bed to the point of shuddering thinking about getting up.

Sore throat, sneezing, congestion and headache are common with colds. With the flu however, you will probably run a high fever for several days accompanied by fatigue, weakness, headache and myalgia. Complications from colds are usually minor, but if you get a severe case of the flu, it can lead to life-threatening illness like pneumonia.

Another form of creepy crud is what people call the stomach flu, which is actually just a form of gastroenteritis or inflammation of the stomach and intestines. Symptoms can be abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea.

And there are other types of hitch-hikers (creepy crud) that you can pick up such as sinus and respiratory infections for instance.


What can you do to help yourself?

I know you have heard this many times before but it is extremely important. Drink plenty of water and get plenty of rest. Your body cannot heal itself without these two things. In fact, dehydration can occur very quickly when you are sick. 

It’s  also a good idea to give your body a rest from most foods while not feeling good. Consuming clear broths, vegetable and fruits juices are good.
